Anthony Bourdain has called it “the world’s best roasted pig”. The chef / tv host is best known for his program Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, where he’s on the hunt for the best cuisines in the world. In one of his episodes, he went to Cebu and called Zubuchon lechon as the best he’s ever tasted.
And when Anthony talks, a lot of people sure listen, including myself.
I went to the Zubuchon branch in Escario Street. It was a pretty small but clean restaurant. As soon as you enter, you can smell the lechon and it instantly whets your appetite!
Anthony’s claim for sure helped skyrocket their sales
For lunch, I had lechon, monggo with lechon, and kamias shake.
lechon 1/2 kilo – P240, 1 kilo – P450
The lechon had the right crispiness and saltiness. It’s very flavorful and the meat is tender. I learned that the skin is extra crunchy because of a pricking method done while the pig is slowly roasting to let the excess fat drip. It goes perfect with the vinegar! (I love suka!) It was yummy but half a kilo was still a lot for me and my companion that there was even leftover.
monggo with lechon – P180
I like this combination. The monggo created contrast with the lechon’s crispiness.
kamias shake – P70
First time I’ve ever heard of a kamias shake. No regrets on this order! It tasted a lot like Cibo’s white grape shake. What’s better, for the month of November, every order of kamias shake will provide one full meal for an undernourished public school child in Cebu. Thumbs up! 🙂
The last time I went to Cebu, I bought home a pack of frozen Zubuchon in their store at the Mactan airport pre departure lounge. Of course, since it’s frozen, the quality is very far from the fresh lechon I tasted in their restaurant.
Will I go back to Zubuchon next time I’m in Cebu? Yes! Was it the best lechon for me? Almost. It’s second on my list. I’ll share with you guys the BEST LECHON i’ve tasted (still in Cebu) in my future blog post. 🙂
Overall, it’s a filling and satisfying meal and I will for sure visit it again next time I’m in Cebu.
